Is Social Networking a Different Language? DS106!!

Instructions: Write a short paper on this topic. Be sure to include some of the saying we use, which one’s you understand and don’t understand, and most of all discuss if social networking language is in fact different from our every day language.

The Process: Before starting this short essay assignment for DS106 I searched for as many acronyms that are commonly used for social media purposes as I knew of via google and my own personal experiences. In google search I typed “The meaning of LoL” and it brought me here. These are all commonly used and I pretty much knew them all already but before I write the essay based solely on my knowledge I wanted to make sure I was correct. I also took a photo of someones comment about the meaning of “LMAO” and they wrote “Love me at once” <— LOL    Also below I have a short list of commonly used acronyms.

The picture was from my iphone I took it here on this page on this page.

A Short List of common Acronyms:

LOL– Laugh out loud LMAO- Laughing my (explicit) off WTF- What the (explicit) FML- (explicit) my life BRB- Be right back G2G- got to go OMG- oh my God/gosh SMH- Shake my head BTW- by the way… BTW this list goes on and on.

A New Language

Social networking sites have become increasingly popular within this decade and involves millions if not billions of users. This increase in use of social networking is due to the advancements in technology, and making the internet and online experiences available to most of the world via computers, smart phones and technology such as the iPad. All of this technology would be useless without apps like Skype or Facebook that connect users in ways like never before. These quick and easy free ways to communicate have become a phenomenon  and also the “reason” users use these products.

Along with the fast way to communicate people have also developed acronyms to replace certain ways of communication such as “LOL” which means laughing out loud and “FML” which means (explicit) my life. This new way of writing has engrained itself into main stream media on all levels and has become the “norm”. The reason why users have created of these acronyms is to substitute for the absence of emotions, when people are speaking in person they are able to see facial expression and hear laughter or crying etc. However, when people communicate through the internet it can be difficult to convey emotional feelings.

Another source used to convey emotions and sometimes replaces the acronyms are images such as 🙂 😦 =) =( these are very basic and there are more graphic images out there called Emoji’s (in Japan). Emoji‘s are a very effective way of expressing feelings and sometimes even explaining something that is simple in nature but somehow language barrier might make it difficult so Emoji’s can become handy.

Conclusion: FYI For your information

Social networking and the use of language within social networking come hand in hand and if you do not know the meaning of the common acronyms I have listed then you are far behind the power curb and there might not be any saving you. There are however acronyms that I have come across which I still dont quite understand so dont feel bad. A few years ago when Twitter became popular I didnt quite get what the hash tag was for, I thought it was putting an emphasis on something. Little did I know it was merely a tool used to connect people who may feel the same way about a subject. Cyber language may take years for older people to understand but for the younger generations it will be as easy as walking a dog.

“Sometimes, however, progress means looping back to earlier ideas whose vitality and importance were unrecognized or underexplored at the time, and bringing those ideas back into play in a new context”

This quote really reminds me of what a friend and I were talking about, about a year ago. We had discussed how much of the technology we see today was inspired by things we seen in movies/media such as cartoons, that were made in the 70’s and 80’s or even 90’s. For example the G.I Joe series had jets that could hover and then a few years later there were Jets that could hover (Harrier) Also in star wars there were droids(robots) and now we see people wanting to creat these robots and even doing AI (artificial Inteligence) I think that alot of the ideas from the past become taste makers for what we develope in the future. Earlier in the semester I wanted to do a blog or make a poster called “The fall of Rome, all for a phone” Which went into the first article scott had us read. That article talked a bit about how if ancient egypt were to try and make an automobile it would have cost them all of their resources. They just didnt have the proper know how or technology to do it. They could have done it, but then the auto mobile would have probably broke down and been made for nothing. That is why technology is important. Right now there are so many ideas that were thought of in the past but were not created back then due to lack of tech or lack of proper resources and/or know how. But with the advancement of technology and better ways of allocating resources much of the ideas from the past are brought to life. Touch screens are amazing, Im sure that was in star wars or star trek. Soon there will be the touch using projection from lights, just move things in the air like the movie “gamer”. I dont know if thats already being researched, but I’m sure we will see it soon.

Lost In The World

Lost In The World

I did the DS106 assignment The Big Hip-Hop and I went to the Website the assignment says to get a photo from. The first photo I saw was this photo of a dog sled team and the woods. The first thing that came to my mind was Kanye West’s song “lost in the world“. I decided to photo shop the text and make his name colorful because I think that’s the way he does it for some marketing projects. I chose the lyrics of his chorus, I feel it fits perfectly. I really like Kanye’s Music and this particular song is awesome! He uses samples from Justin Vernon from Bon Iver and really blends his style well.

May I Take Your Order?

The Story:

I chose to do the May I Take Your Order Ds106 assignment because I thought it would be fun trying to speak in a different accent. At first, I tried to sound like a chinese immigrant in America but that seemed like it was fake so I trashed it, then I tried to sound like I was french and that was even worse. After the first two different attempts I felt like giving up, thinking it was just silly. But giving up is harder than trying and I thought why not use a british or Australian accent? So I tried that… NOPE!!! sounded fake! Finally I said screw it and I went for the southern american accent and I think it was the closest I could do to immitate an accent.

The Process:

I used the mac lab on the 5th floor of TUJ where there is a sound proof room, I recorded my voice with out a script the first few times but I found that writing a script and practicing the script would make it sound better after a few attempts. I uploaded it on sound cloud and TADA, my southern accent was born!

What’s the Meme?

I have been waiting for awhile to find the right photo to use in this Visual assignment on Ds106 , and I happened to be riding the JR line in Tokyo on my way to CIS, and the train was very crowded, and it really smelled extra bad on this day. Well, the source of this awful smell is right there in this picture. I wasnt even standing directly infront of him before the picture and I could smell his breathe. I ended up getting forced into the spot infront of him because of the train being so crowded. I figured since I had to witness his awful hygiene I was going to get this photo! The train had just stopped at Ueno, and I wanted to take a movie and make fun of this awful smelling guy, but I found an iphone app which would allow me to take silent photos. So I quickly downloaded the app and captured the moment, he was snoring and smelled horrible and right as I captured the photo he opened his mouth to yawn and let me tell you… I almost died of some kind of poisoning…

I used photo shop and just created 3 layers. The first layer was installed to add a backround for the text. I think that the green fade blends well because when I think of stinky gas or something, green comes to my mind and I definately wanted to kind of have a stinky theme. My second layer I dedicated to installing the Text, which states “Brush yo teeth man!!!” (Yo=your) I wrote this particular text because it’s what I wanted to say to him. Finally, my third layer, I decided to add green air brushed streaks as if his chemical/gas breathe was toxic, with little chemical/gas toxin entities also escaping his mouth.

Man, I hate to say this but I’m glad that this is almost over, I met some really cool people and the Professor is awesome, but these assignments are very demanding and I am just not into design and PC stuff, I’d love taking cool photos like Nana but I cant afford a decent camera with a decent lense. Job hunting sucks when you have assignments to do, and working sucks when you have school to attend. Summer… I am waiting for you… Please be good to me, and I promise I will not waste you like I have done in the past. Also SHOUT OUT @Scott for giving us this extra couple days for these DS106 assignments, thats called really understanding the class and really caring about the students!

Jeremy’s Prez

Jeremy had a presentation today about Fan Subtitle rights. He covered mostly about japanese anime and said that befor the digital age creators of the anime didnt mind because it was free advertisement, but once the internet came along and things were much easier to download and spread, people who created these anime’s were losing money. Jeremy asked me at the very end what I felt about “Fansubs” and I didnt have time to fully answer him.

Jeremy, I think that it is wrong if you fansub a flick and send it to someone else or make it available to someone else. But if you feel the need to translate it for your own personal use I dont see why that would be a problem especially if you are just editing the copy that you already purchased.

Also I think that all this pirating stuff can stop if they just make a technology that can block DvD’s and CD’s from being copied in the first place. Some kind of coding on the CD or DvD that prevents machine’s from Dubbing. If the coding is overidden or by-passed then the info on the DVD or CD should get erased automatically. Thats just what I think… I mean with all the technology in the world today and we cant prevent people from pirating?? But we can sure as hell make pirating possible? doesnt make any sense! Why these big companies dont use their money to prevent pirating is beyond me…

Thanks Jeremy for your impressive prez
